New Year's Resolutions?

Updated: Mar 21, 2020

Hello, dear fam!

I'm getting right to the point because 2020 is right around the corner!

I love the idea of a New Year and a fresh start with self-growth and improvement, but I also think that there is WAY too much pressure associated with making resolutions. Often, we list far too many things we want to "change" about ourselves, and there is a lot of shame associated with the failure we feel when we give up and don't meet those resolutions. So, I'm proposing something else... a reframing. Fuck the word "resolution". Instead, replace it with the idea of growth.

For example, your resolution of "Lose 30 pounds" turns into "grow healthier", which can encompass so many different things like eating better, moving your body, getting a gym membership, drinking less, joining a dog-walking group, taking a cooking class, eating more plant-based foods, whatever you like. You'll probably lose weight, but it won't seem so hard or threatening, and as you grow healthier, so does your mind, and you realize these shameful body image beliefs are simply that. Beliefs. Not truths. And you begin to build a stronger, healthier you, not just a thinner you.

You will need a plan though. You can't just decide "I'm going to grow into a healthier person" and then just get healthy overnight. READ. Research. Put pen to paper! Make a plan. DO THE WORK. Growth isn't easy! But, it's always worth it.

I wish you a really wonderful year of growth and happiness. You've got it in you. I promise.

Xox,

M
